Snacks to Avoid with Renal Cancer

Snacks to Avoid with Renal Cancer

Kidneys, like most organs, are susceptible to cancer. As a result, medications, chemotherapy, and diet moderations to exclude foods that harm the kidneys are important. Research shows that oxalate foods must be avoided if you suffer from renal cancer. Spinach, tofu, green leafy vegetables, nuts, and bran are some of the foods that contain oxalate chemicals. These chemicals get lodged in the kidney, form stones, and interfere with treatments too. Similarly, patients suffering from chronic kidney disease may have trouble digesting protein, so the intake of protein must be limited as well. Hence, a diet chart must take care of foods to avoid with renal cancer.

Ailing kidneys increase the risk of several diseases. Uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure are some of them. Damaged kidneys are unable to function properly and fluids accumulate in the blood. However, limiting the intake of certain foods can improve kidney function, reduce fluid accumulation, and prevent further damage. Dietary restrictions must thus be observed.

A renal diet must have healthy food items with less sugar, fat, and sodium. Here’s a list of snacks or foods to avoid with renal cancer:

Processed meat snacks
Processed meats are high in sodium content and nitrates, and have been linked to cancer. All snacks made from meats with cold cuts like bologna and ham must be avoided. Leaner meats like chicken are low in sodium and nitrate and must be chosen over processed meat snacks.

Frozen snacks
Frozen or microwavable snacks are highly processed and among the top foods to avoid with renal cancer. This means higher levels of sugar, sodium, and fat and must be avoided.

Dark-colored colas
Manufacturers add phosphorus to certain beverages and foods in addition to sugar and excessive calories. Dark-colored colas contain high quantities of phosphorus to enhance the flavor and prolong shelf life. This chemical is much more absorbable by the human body in its additive form. Hence, they must be avoided.

Guacamole
Known for their nutritious qualities that include healthy fibers, fats, and antioxidants, avocados are rich in potassium. It contains approximately double the amount of potassium than a medium banana. Thus, avocado-based snack bites like guacamole are one of the foods to avoid with renal cancer since people need to watch the amount of potassium intake.

Canned foods
Canned foods, such as beans, fruits, and vegetables often double up as a convenient snack option. However, these snacks contain high amounts of sodium in the form of salt to prolong its shelf life. Since sodium is not recommended for chronic kidney patients, their consumption must be limited.

Whole wheat breads
While whole-wheat bread is usually considered a healthy option, owing to its richness in potassium, sodium, and phosphorus content, kidney patients are advised to avoid whole wheat bread snacks. In fact, refined, white flour bread is recommended for such patients.
