Tips To Deodorize Your Fridge

Tips To Deodorize Your Fridge

A refrigerator is useful for keeping food fresh for longer and minimizing the wastage of food. It is indeed very helpful to store and freeze raw and cooked food, ensuring their safety for consumption. However, sometimes, after a power outage or an accidental unplugging, the freezer seems to let out an unpleasant odor. At other times, foods stored for a long time and the lack of regular cleaning of the freezer may lead to a bad odor. Even after cleaning your refrigerator, the smell may remain. Here are some useful tips to banish lingering freezer odors effectively:

  • Baking soda or vanilla extract
Keeping a bowl of baking soda seems to be the most common way of deodorizing your freezer. It effectively removes unpleasant odors, but if you are apprehensive of whether baking soda is safe, there are alternatives as well. One of the tips to banish freezer odors is to pour a little vanilla extract into a bowl and keep it in the refrigerator. It will absorb all the odors, and your freezer will smell fresh each time you open it.
  • Freshly ground coffee
Freshly ground coffee also helps as it absorbs bad odors. Simply keep an uncovered bowl of freshly ground coffee in your freezer to deodorize it, especially after a power outage. You can leave it there for some time, and use it as a fertilizer for plants after removing it. However, do not use this to make coffee.
  • Vinegar
Another effective tip to banish freezer odors is to use vinegar. You just need a small amount of vinegar added to a paper towel or a small washcloth to do this. Alternatively, you can soak a small cotton ball in vinegar and place it in a shallow bowl at the back of your freezer, and replenish when it dries out. Vinegar perfectly neutralizes the odor in the refrigerator resulting from a power outage as well as from foods being stored over a long period.
  • Oatmeal
Oatmeal is usually present in every household, and in case you are running out of baking soda, vanilla extract, and vinegar, use can use this. Keep an open container of dry oats in the freezer to ensure that your freezer always smells fresh.
  • Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits like oranges or grapefruit are also effective in deodorizing the refrigerator. Hollow out an orange or grapefruit, fill it with salt, and keep it at the back of the freezer. Leave it there until the salt gets damp and then remove or replace it if needed. The salt draws out the citrus smell and spreads it across the refrigerator, getting rid of any odors.

While all these tips to banish freezer odors work perfectly well, you must carry out an occasional cleaning of the freezer, including all its shelves and racks, to ensure that the food stored is fit for consumption.
